RAGE has two multiplayer modes: Road Rage and Wasteland Legends. In Road Rage, up to four players compete in a free-for-all match that takes place in an arena designed to make use of the vehicles. The objective is to collect Rally Points that appear around the arena while killing the opponents and stealing their points. The Wasteland Legends is a series of two-player co-op missions based on stories that are heard throughout the single-player Campaign. There are a total of nine objectives in this game type.
The first multiplayer offering in RAGE is Road Rage, which includes "Carnage", "Meteor Rally", "Chain Rally", and "Triad Rally". In this competitive multiplayer mode, the objective is to be the player with the highest point total by the end of the match. To do this, the player will need to destroy the other racers and pass through the Rally Points scattered across the map. The key strategy is to get up behind the other players and damaging them with machine gun fire and rockets. The player can monitor how much damage they're dealing, as well as how much they've received, by the condition of their vehicle and by the enemy vehicle's health bar. If the vehicle is missing both of their doors and there is smoke pouring out of the engine, then chances are good that the player isn't going to last much longer without an Armor Restore or Armor Recharge.
The second method for scoring points, which was accomplished by grabbing meteorites in either a chain or in multiples, complicates things a bit. These meteorites appear as glowing blue-and-white markers on the ground that would start a score multiplier combo when driven over, which would increase as the player earned additional markers. The developers noted here that after the player hits the first the marker, the following markers are dynamically generated so that they are both nearby and in front of the player's vehicle. These two elements together made for a multiplayer session that was reminiscent of the frantic gameplay found in the developer's previous games. It's also worth noting that the RAGE combat rally demonstration featured the classic Quake III voice announcer.
The second multiplayer offering falls in the cooperative category. Named the Wasteland Legends, this mode has two players work together to complete specially designed missions that are based off of stories told by characters during the Campaign. For instance, there is a series of missions centered around a RC Bomb Car factory in the Shrouded Bunker. The local Sheriff sends some of his boys in to investigate, and they come back with schematic on how to build these explosive toys. In Wasteland Legends, the team will play as those boys. The cooperative missions play just like the single-player game, albeit with a lot more enemies to compensate for the additional player.
